I've adopted along haired cat whos hair is so tightly matted to his skin. What can i do?

I have brushed him,cut his fur, and as a last resort tryed useing the clippers on him.His fur is so tight to the skin that i can't get the clipper between the hair and skin. What do i do?

shave that kitty down and start fresh. Use a trained groomer for the job. Afterwards you have to brush your cat every single day. Most cats love it but some take a little time. If he has let you perform all of the above he must be a pretty good little fellow. But go to a pro please

Reply:You can attempt to bathe the cat. It's a very risky task considering it's a cat, but it might get the fur at least clean and managable. Other than that, continue to brush it daily and hope the old hair grows out long enough to cut the damaged parts off.

Reply:I would call groomers in the area and see if anyone can help you. See if you can find someone who does cats. If not then look around at some pet shops and see if they sell anything that says its gets mats out. There are things that sell here in Germany that easily take mat out of fur, but I have never seen them in the states.
Reply:take him to a petsmart and have them shave him with professional clippers
Reply:If you don't have an electric pet razor, very slowly cut the matted fur about an inch away from the skin. This will loosen things a little. Then slowly cut as near to the skin as you can. If there is just a little hair left, the matted stuff comes out more easily.

Reply:I had that same problem if you are asking me take him in and have him shaved. I had to do that and I just made it a ever 3-6 months. I swear his hair grew in matted. He was mean so I couldn't even brush him if I wanted to.
Reply:The only way to fix it is to shave him. If there is no way for you to do it yourself, try a groomer or even a vet. they have really good clippers and may be able to sedate the cat (as cats don't really like to be shaved)
Reply:you need to take him to the vet. mats are extremly painful, due to the fact that cats have so many nerves.
