I'm African American and I have oily skin but the cleanser that I just started using is drying out my skin but clearing my occasional acne. I can see try skin flakes on my forehead and around the crease of my nose. My sister uses Aveda on her oily skin too. Im looking for something from a department store, I've tried store brands and its the same thing, they dry out and make my skin feel too tight. What am I doing wrong?
Does anyone know of a good cleansing, toning and moisturizing system for oily skin?
I would try Cliniques 3 step process.
It contains a soap that will clear away oil and dirt from the skin the next is the "toner" which is the exfoliation part of the skin because we have up to 30 layers of dead skin cells and by doing that we are actually removing one of the outer most layers. It also helps with flakyness which is also a result from not enough exfolation. Finally is the moisturizer and in your case if your oily it would be the gel form because its oil free but is also going to add back the equal balance of water/oil ratio on the skin.
The nice thing about this all is that its custom fitted and they back up their products 100%.
Where your skin is getting dry and tight is because your stipping to much of the ph balance that we need for our skin to be healthy. Try Clinique once! Hope this helps

Reply:gurl, the best thing to do is to see your dermatologist to prescribe you a more specialized solution for your skin type... there is also such thing as facial dandruff (yep, you heard me right) that could be what youre saying as flakes in your forehead. since it is fungal thingy, no amount of moisturizer could heal it permanently, it must be treated accordingly. as for yur oily skin, wash your face 2x a day with a cleanser with salicylic acid. Do not over wash for it may only trigger your sebaceous glands to produce more oil. wash with warm water and rinse with a colder one to close the pores. Don't use oil-based moisturizer, instead, use skin hydrants- it usually comes in gel forms.
Reply:I've experienced this before on a cleanser I've used. I went back to the dermatologist clinic I bought it from and I was advised that I should avoid applying the cleanser on the part where my skin has dried out. Just apply your cleanser on the part you have acne, it's possible that it's just this part that is causing your skin to get oily but the other areas of your face could be fine. Or you could also be over using it. Apply/use your cleanser at the right amount. If the direction to use it says 'pea-size', use it in that manner. Try this first before you buy another new product. And if you do intend to buy one, consult a dermatologist instead of the cosmetics counter. You could be allergic to over the counter facial cleansers and should consider buying a prescribed one.
Take care!

Reply:I have several friends with oily skin who have been using Clinique for a long time. It is carried in department stores. They will give you a free makeover and suggest which to use. Purchase only what you truly want to try. Perhaps they can provide you with samples to test first. My sister swears Clinque saved her skin. I finally tried Clinique for my dryer skin and love it. Good luck.
