What's with the belly fat rollover (ie. "Muffin Top") phenomenon?

I'm not being critical here, so please don't attack me (yeah, right). I want serious answers only. I'm just trying to understand this - there has to be a reason because it's so common.

Is there a reason why women these days are wearing skin tight jeans with skin tight shirts so you can see the belly rolls? The clothes are clearly ill-fitting, so there has to be a reason for it.

Is it a sign of fertility or something?

Is it because clothes are expensive and they can't afford new things?

It it just the style? Are you trying to assert that women can be beautiful — rolls and all?

Please, there has to be an answer to this! I want to know. That's why I'm posting.

I'm with you. I don't understand it. VERY few women are flattered by that muffin top look. It accentuates the worst in even young, slim girls.

Many women are not confident in their own personal style and they simply do not know what looks good on them--colors nor style of clothing. They have to wear whatever the current fad is, even if they look horrible in it. And any woman who would wear tight fitting clothes that show her rolls and rolls of fat either doesn't care about her appearance or is in serious denial.
Reply:Tight hip hugging pants came in to fashion, and girls with a little too much fat tried to pull it off as if they were skinny. It didn't work and the fat spills over the top of the pants.
Reply:i dont know why they do it..maybe they're afraid of bigger sizes?
Reply:lol i think they are in denial about their size. i have a friend who always buys a size too small

i don't think they realise it, or its something mental, like they don't want to believe their size

or they just think it looks hot ;x
Reply:i have no idea...... see i wear clothes that are the right sizes.. but always feel i have the muffin top... ewww feels so gross
Reply:Well, I don't think it's the style. It's the fact that many people are in denial about the size they really are and are trying to squeeze into something that is obviously too tight but makes them feel better b/c they are able to get into a size 8 or 10 or whatever it is, even though they are really a size or two bigger. No matter what the reason, this never looks good and nothing will make a person fatter than ill fitting clothes.
Reply:I think people want to wear the style to follow fashion, without considering how it is going to look on them. If style dictates that a section of your body has to be revealed either by tight fitting clothes or by actually showing it, then many people will go ahead and reveal it, regardless of whether theirs ought to be seen or would be better off hidden.
Reply:hey the designers think every one is a sise 1 or 0 so they make things as little as possiable
Reply:well, I don´t know about other women, but %26gt;I hate it..however sometimes I´ve shown a little bit of fat as well, due to weight changes and too lazy to go shopping... I think a lot of women refuse to go a size bigger when they gain weight, which of course is ridiculous, the number of the size doesn´t matter, how it looks on you does though...but maybe I am all wrong and it´s a trend or smt, I am curious myself..
Reply:THICK people need luv too..... They want to show off what they mama gave them.....They want to be like the skinny gurl ,,they dn't wont to be left out ......But truth is i realy don't knw the answer to that i have been wondering they same thing ....Now that summer is coming up there is going to be skin alll over ....but whe you find out let me knw
Reply:LOL That was funny :)
Reply:I think it's just stupidity.

Wearing jeans that tight isn't healthy for a couple of reasons that I won't get into on here. lol

I don't care what people look like, if they want to show off their gut who cares. But they should care about their health more than their looks.
Reply:I think it's happening because women (and Americans in general) are gaining weight faster than they realize. Sometimes we tend to refuse to let go of old clothing, even if it's ill-fitting, because we don't want to admit to ourselves that we've outgrown stuff.

I think it's a by-product of the typical American lifestyle: eat fatty food (including junk food), drink a bunch of soda, and then drive a car all the time instead of walking places.

Voila! Muffin-top!
Reply:Unfortunately, some women have that Male Gene that inhibits them from looking into a mirror before they leave the house! They think they look good just because their outfit looks good on other people. Just like men who need other people to dress them because they are color blind - and have no fashion sense!

One more reason might be that clothing fits differently throughout the day, depending on your level of activity - we are also slimmer when we wake up because our spine cartilage hasn't compacted yet which will make a woman look frumpy after they leave for the day because their bodies are literally being squished making the muffin top or oozing belly protrude sideways because it has nowhere else to go!!!
Reply:it's because people are getting bigger but the makers of all the trendy fashionable stuff are idiots %26amp; keep making their stuff too small so that only stick thin girls can wear it %26amp; it's unfair. OR they could be stuck in the "misfit 20s" category that my friend %26amp; I came up with. Basically everything is made for teen girls %26amp; under or women in their 30s %26amp; over but nothing specifically in the 20s range that looks good %26amp; is age appropriate but is NOT club wear or "old lady" wear. I have that problem. I'm 24, the "juniors" stuff is waaaayyy too flashy %26amp; small for me but at the same time all the "misses" type stuff looks like crap my mother would wear. UGH! Not all the bigger sizes are all that good looking either. I've got a friend who wears an 18/20 %26amp; rarely finds anything she likes because half of it is so ugly.
